LEEDS UNITED V GRIMSBY TOWN

TWO NEW PLAYERS ON TRIAL AT ELLAND ROAD

That there are still a number of Association football enthuisiasts was shown by the attendance at Elland Road, this afternoon, when Leeds United , in furtherance of their Midland League programme, met Grimsby Town. Leeds gave a trial to two new men, Harrison, an outside left, and Watson, a right half, both from the Sunderland district.

After a strong opening, Grimsby fell away, and then United forced the game. They probe and Ellson, after a neat dribble in which he passed three men, drove the ball into the net. Grimsby had a spell of attacking after this, but they found the United defence safe.

Coope, a man discovered in Saturday's trial match , played an especially sound game at left back. Fawcett, on the Leeds right wing, was next conspicuous with several tricky runs, all of which were followed by admirably placed centres.

Leeds showed themselves to have the better combination, and their forwards made several good movements. Hart, from a centre by Fawcett, had hard luck. He headed the ball against the bar, and it went dead.

Just before half-time Grimsby got in front of the Leeds goal, and , after Jeffries had made a fine save from Golightly, Bird headed over an open goal.

At the other end Ellson, Butler and Fawcett missed the goal by inches with several hard drives, before Ellson opened the scoring after a very tricky run, and Bird scored for Grimsby just before half-time.

LEEDS UNITED V GRIMSBY TOWN

DRAWN GAME AT ELLAND ROAD

Leeds United were distinctly unluckyin their Midland League engagement with Grimsby Town yesterday. They fielded quite a strong team, which includedtwo new men - Watson and Harrison - from the Sunderland district., and on the run of play should have secured a somewhat easy victory. In the first half they shared the honours. Ellson scored for United after a very tricky run, and Bird for Grimsby. There was no score in the second half, but that was due chiefly to the weakness of the United forwards when in front of the Grimsby goal. Time after time they out-witted the visiting backs, and then failed to make full use of their chances. True they had hard luck with several really good shots, but the inside men hesitated too long when the ball was at their feet, or shot wildly, while the two wingers did not get the ball to the centre as often as they might have done.
